MBTA and Masabi to Launch First Smartphone Rail Ticketing System in the U.S.

Apps will allow Commuter Rail customers to purchase and display tickets on iPhone, Android and Blackberry

BOSTON, MA – 23rd April 2012 – Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi US Ltd, the transit mobile ticketing pioneer, jointly announce that they will be bringing mobile ticketing to MBTA commuter rail riders this fall. With applications for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, customers will be able to seamlessly purchase commuter rail tickets and passes. Once tickets are purchased, customers will be able to use and display directly via their phone screen.

“MassDOT and the MBTA are striving to bring our customers convenience without added costs. We are delivering just that with this project and this technology,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey.

“With this new and innovative approach, we are putting a ticket machine right in the palms of our customers’ hands,” said Acting MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis.

Less than half of MBTA’s 140 Commuter Rail stations have fare vending machines, forcing many customers to pay for tickets on board. But that will soon change as riders will be able to purchase tickets via credit or debit cards directly from their phones. Monthly pass holders will be able to seamlessly link a plastic CharlieCard to their pass allowing them “tap-in” instead of using magnetic tickets for the MBTA subway and bus systems.

The new solution will help the MBTA reduce costs by eliminating the need for additional vending machines and lowering cash handling costs. To help combat fare evasion, all mobile tickets will have barcodes allowing for validation. Throughout the pilot program, smart phone-equipped train conductors will be checking tickets to ensure their validity. Masabi will provide a comprehensive mTicketing solution including; consumer-facing applications, backend servers, payment integration and scanning/validation software for train conductors.

“By placing a personalized ticket machine in the pocket of commuters, they can now buy tickets wherever they are, faster than ever before,” said Giacomo Biggiero, Director of Masabi US Ltd. “MBTA will also see significant benefits in terms of reducing costly cash handling charges and the cost of additional ticket machines. We are delighted to be working with them to launch our first mTicketing system in the U.S.”

In the coming months, the MBTA will be inviting customers to participate in designing the new applications via focus groups and a small group pilot which will roll out in late summer. The full deployment to all MBTA customers is expected this fall.

All transactions are secured using the award-winning encryptME security system that has been validated to U.S. Government standards.

Redspottedhanky.com and Masabi Launch UK Rail Mobile Phone Ticketing Service

Text REDSPOT to 86688 to get free UK ticket retailing application on both smartphones and everyday handsets

LONDON, UK – 20th February 2012 – redspottedhanky.com, the award winning online travel retailer, today announced it is using Masabi, a developer of mTicketing technology for the transport sector, for its mobile ticketing service. The mobile application allows travellers to search for train times, buy tickets and earn loyalty points for any route in the UK, with displayable mTickets available on certain routes, eliminating the need for many passengers to use ticket machines. The apps currently support iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Nokia smartphones, as well as most everyday phones, with a Windows Phone 7 version launching soon.

Customers can quickly and easily search for and buy train tickets and earn loyalty points without paying any booking fees – repeat purchases are even faster, requiring only a few key presses. mTickets are supported on certain routes, such as the Chiltern Railways network, in the form of 2D barcodes. Where mTickets are not available, customers can collect their tickets using a booking reference number at most UK rail stations. The application also has the option to link purchases to the user’s web account, giving them a single convenient place to view all purchases, or print out receipts for expenses claims.

“It is now possible to get the great redspottedhanky.com service on the go where customers can check train times and buy the cheapest possible tickets whilst earning loyalty points using their mobile phone, whether it’s the latest smartphone or a basic everyday handset,” said James Bain, redspottedhanky.com’s Director and Co-Founder. “We look forward to continuing to work with Masabi to further develop the mobile applications and offer more advanced features, ultimately improving our customers’ experience.”

“As more and more consumers opt to travel by rail, there is a need to find new ways to sell tickets without necessarily expanding every station. This application allows consumers to completely bypass ticket machines, making their journeys as effortless and enjoyable as possible, from buying the ticket to boarding the train,” said Giacomo Biggiero, CPO of Masabi. “We are extremely pleased to be working with forward-thinking online rail ticket vendors like redspottedhanky.com in bringing this innovative service to the public.”

All transactions are secured using Masabi’s award-winning, US government certified, encryptME security system that will ultimately support phone-based contactless technology, such as NFC, once it is widely available on handsets.

About Masabi

Masabi is the leading developer of mobile ticketing technology for the transport sector. Its award-winning ‘Ticket Machine in Your Pocket’ applications signal the end of ticket queues by allowing passengers to quickly and securely buy and display tickets on almost any mobile phone, not just smartphones. The company’s technology allows transport operators to transform their passengers’ travel experience while also dramatically expanding sales capacity without significantly increasing costs. Based in London, it has 35 employees and is backed by m8 Capital. For further information see www.masabi.com

About redspottedhanky.com

redspottedhanky.com is an online travel retailer, providing an easy way for leisure and business travellers to compare and book cheap train tickets and hotels online, and to save up to 80% on the cost of tickets booked in advance without incurring booking fees. Most notably, redspottedhanky.com offers something truly unique when buying train tickets online: it is the first ever British online retailer to offer loyalty points that can be redeemed against future train travel for any journey in Great Britain. For regular train travellers in these cash-strapped times, participation in the loyalty scheme would allow them to earn points for redemption against future rail travel and be rewarded beyond the price of a single ticket.

redspottedhanky.com’s loyalty programme – the first and only rewards scheme available for train travel – now allows travellers to earn double points on hotel bookings for redemption against future rail travel and hotels, which are part of the loyalty programme scheme.

redspottedhanky.com won the Innovation category at the 2011 National Rail Awards. The judges were particularly impressed by redspottedhanky.com’s efforts to increase footfall at railway stations nation-wide and to get the best deal for customers.

Virtual Ticket is a Reality

A local train company is providing customers with a virtual ticket to make travelling by train that bit easier.
First TransPennine Express (FTPE) has updated its mobile app so that customers travelling to and from Manchester Airport can use their phone as a ticket.

FTPE introduced a mobile app in October last year that allowed customers to purchase tickets and plan their journeys. This app has now been updated to allow customers purchasing Airport Advance tickets the opportunity to receive their ticket in a digital format, known as an mTicket.

The app works on almost any phone ranging from older style Nokia handsets to the latest smartphones. The mTickets could eventually be rolled out on all FTPE routes but are for now only available for direct journeys to and from Manchester Airport.

Customers can pay for tickets by credit or debit card, with no booking fee and all transactions are protected by award-winning, certified security software.

Once purchased customers can either collect their tickets from booking offices or ticket machines or opt for the mTicket all within ten minutes of pressing buy.

Tickets to or from Manchester Aiport that are purchased via the app will automatically be made available to customers on their phone.

The updated App will also provide customers with train times, fares and through it’s GPS capabilities, live departures and arrivals from their local station.

It also now lets customers buy group tickets for up to eight people and synchronises with the FTPE website (www.tpexpress.co.uk) so all mobile and web purchases can be seen in one place. The app allows users to buy tickets and check times for all the UK’s train services and is completely free to download.

Vickie Tennant, FTPE’s e-Commerce Manager commented;

“We are delighted that we have been able to introduce these added features to what has so far proved a very popular App.

“Customers travelling to and from Manchester Airport will now be able to plan their journey, buy their ticket and travel on FTPE services all via their mobile phone.

“The Live arrival and departures board is also a really useful addition that will keep customers informed of the very latest train running information.”

To date nearly 8000 customers have downloaded the FTPE App.

The FTPE App can be downloaded for free via the appropriate app store and customers are advised to search for tpexpress. It can also be downloaded by texting shortcode ‘TPEAPP’ to 86688′ *

*Texts will be charged at users standard text message rate.

The new free app from redspottedhanky.com offers consumers the best value of any independent rail retailer available in the app store, as well as the opportunity to compile valuable loyalty points for use against future rail travel.

redspottedhanky’s app, available across all platforms, cements their commitment to providing customers with the easiest, most user friendly experience with no additional card or booking fees. Further developments are planned, including the inclusion of live train times.

- Ends-

About redspottedhanky.com:
redspottedhanky.com is an online travel retailer, providing an easy way for leisure and business travellers to compare and book cheap train tickets and hotels online, and to save up to 80% on the cost of tickets booked in advance without incurring booking fees.

Masabi Secures $4 million from m8 Capital to Drive Major UK Deployments and US Expansion

Company seeing strong growth in UK rail mTicketing services with more than nine rail brands live by year-end including thetrainline.com, Virgin Trains, Cross Country Trains, First TransPennine Express, First Hull Trains and Chiltern Railways

LONDON, UK – 2nd November 2011 – Masabi, the developer of mobile phone ticketing technology, today announced the completion of a $4 million Series B funding round with m8 Capital, the mobile technology venture capital fund.

The funding will be used to support deployments with multiple rail companies in the UK, and for the development of new service features, including NFC technology. It will also help facilitate expansion into new markets, particularly the US, where the company is seeing strong interest.

Since securing its Series A funding round in September 2010, Masabi has gone from strength to strength, with multiple successful launches of mTicketing services including Cross Country Trains, thetrainline.com, Virgin Trains and Chiltern Railways. The company is also working with additional UK rail brands that are set to go live in the coming months.

Masabi’s applications turn mobile phones into personalised ticket machines which allow people to securely purchase and display tickets on most handsets currently in use – not just smartphones. Once people have bought a ticket, their phone can be easily scanned at the gate or by a train guard, much like an Oyster card on London’s transport system. This means travellers can avoid ticket machines and queues, making their rail journeys a faster, more enjoyable experience.

“Masabi is fast becoming a world leader in m-commerce and mobile phone ticketing technology, with not only a growing UK client base but also significant international deals on the horizon,” said Joseph Kim, General Partner at m8 Capital. “m8 Capital’s series B investment today will help Ben and the team realise the full growth potential of the Masabi technology.”

“We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from consumers using our mTicketing solutions, proving that mobile phones can revolutionise the way we travel,” commented Ben Whitaker, CEO of Masabi. “This funding and m8 Capital’s experience will be instrumental in bringing our applications to new markets, making transport mTicketing a truly global phenomenon.”

In addition to customer success, Masabi has recently received numerous industry awards including being named a winner at the 2011 BLN Mobile in Money Awards, the 2011 Digital Entrepreneur Awards and the 2010 Bully Awards, as well as being recognised as a Top 50 Mobile Innovator by Mobile Entertainment.

Buy Rail Tickets on Everyday Mobile Phones and Smartphones with First TransPennine Express Apps

No more queuing at stations with ticket machines in your pocket for Nokia, iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and other popular phones.

A local train company is launching a brand new application to quickly and easily help passengers plan journeys and purchase train tickets.

First TransPennine Express (FTPE) has teamed up with mobile app producer Masabi and online ticket provider thetrainline.com to offer customers a fun, informative and free application to make travelling by train that bit easier.

Customers can now download the free app which is compatible with iPhones, Blackberry’s, Android, Nokia, Samsung and other popular handsets. The download is available via the appropriate app stores and customers are advised to search for tpexpress. The new app can also be downloaded by texting shortcode ‘TPEAPP’ to 86688′ * and will allow customers to book train travel throughout the U.K.

The App will provide train times, fares and put the ability to purchase tickets directly in the hands of customers across the country – and all for free. There is no cost to download the app and customers are not charged a booking fee.

Vickie Tennant, FTPE’s e-Commerce Manager commented;

“We are really pleased that we have been able to develop and launch this app. It will make planning a train journey that bit easier.

“Customers can check train times and buy tickets for any route in the U.K. and we hope that users will find it easy to navigate and fun to use.

“Best of all, it’s completely free and coupled with FTPE’s great value fares and no booking or credit card fees, this app is a must for all mobile phones, not just the new style smartphones.”

FTPE’s iconic branding can be seen throughout the app and customers should find the process of buying tickets that bit easier as it will remember individual’s details including the use of rail discount cards.

Customers will soon have the option of using mTickets on some routes and services. For these journeys the ticket is sent directly to the mobile device meaning, no need for queues or paper tickets to be misplaced in their handbag or wallet.

Customers can pay for tickets by credit or debit card and all transactions are protected by award-winning, certified security software. Once purchased customers can either collect their tickets from booking offices or ticket machines within ten minutes of pressing buy.

“This application transforms the experience of buying rail tickets for consumers – whether they own a cutting edge Smartphone or a basic five-year-old handset. The user interface is designed to make finding the best priced fare easier than ever letting consumers plan trips at their leisure,” said Ben Whitaker, CEO of Masabi. “We are delighted to be working with First TransPennine Express and thetrainline.com to help make 2011 the breakthrough year for mobile ticketing.”

Richard Rowson, Product Development Director at thetrainline.com said;

“Mobile propositions have become a core area of focus for us over the past two years. The ever present and personalised nature of the mobile phone, coupled with features such as location awareness, make mobile apps arguably the easiest way possible to buy train tickets – particularly repeat purchases where previous details are stored. Our mobile apps have quickly become the most popular in the market for checking train times, and we are delighted to be working with First TransPennine Express to bring these benefits to their customers.”
