validation options

Expensive validation systems for new ticketing projects can require heavy investment. mTicketing is a demonstrably cheaper and more flexible alternative to many other ticketing systems.

low initial capital expenditure

Unlike smartcard systems, operators can launch mTicketing without significant CAPEX. Expenditure on validation equipment and infrastructure can be increased as more and more passengers begin to adopt the technology. This makes mTicketing a comparatively low risk option that allows operators to control their budgets far more effectively.

faster than smartcard

Encrypted barcode mTickets can be scanned and validated in an average time of 240ms – faster than smartcard and faster than paper tickets.

offline validation

In the real world of underground stations, tunnels and intermittent connectivity, validation systems cannot rely on constant connectivity to a central database to authorise tickets. Scanners, both fixed and handheld, can validate barcode mTickets offline.

highly evolved anti-fraud measures

Barcode mTickets are encrypted using Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). The transport operator is given a private key to generate encrypted tickets. Validators and scanning equipment only carry a public key – required to decrypt and read the barcode. Even if a validator is lost or stolen, it can only be used to read mTickets, not generate them.

Readable mTickets feature animated colour signatures that change over time to alert inspectors to fraudulent or copied tickets. They must also be activated before the journey, which marks them as used, so that they cannot be used again.

open security standards facilitate interoperability

Open security standards make it easier for operators and suppliers to work together. Masabi worked with the Rail Settlement Plan (RSP), part of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), to set the open security standard for mTicketing in the UK, and is currently advising on wider European standards.
