"We understand that our passengers want a secure and easy way to purchase their tickets on the go. This pioneering technology means that our passengers will be able to securely buy a ticket from their mobile and receive it in seconds. As the majority of our passengers all carry mobile phones, this really does mean that passengers will be able to walk up and travel anywhere, any time."
- David Whitley, Marketing Planning Manager at Chiltern Railways

Chiltern Railways announced a world first in mobile ticketing that means passengers can buy a rail ticket direct from their mobile and travel. Working with YourRail, Masabi delivered the only complete end-to-end mobile rail ticketing system in the world using EncryptME the world’s first NIST certified mobile security software as validated by BT. Fifty passengers were selected to take place in this pioneering trial which will allow them to simply, securely and quickly purchase and display train tickets on their mobile phone. The mobile ticketing trial will last until December 2007 with passengers giving regular feedback.

advantages
"Since January, Chiltern Railways, together with YourRail, has supplied British rail passengers with tickets delivered to their mobile phones. This later included a gate solution from Cubic Transportation Systems. We were the very first to do this. Now we have achieved another ‘first’. A selection of Chiltern’s customers can now buy their electronic tickets directly from their mobile phones in addition to on the web. This innovation, developed for YourRail by Masabi, is a highly secure and convenient method of making purchases on-the-move."
- David Gillick, Director of YourRail
Rail travelers can simply purchase tickets from their mobile phone and then board the train. Even first time users can purchase without pre-registration - securely and simply. Mobile ticket purchasing has several advantages over conventional purchase:
- Users can buy on their way to the station, instead of queuing and trying to purchase a ticket from a limited number of machines or sales attendants when they would rather be climbing on a train.
- The phone handset remembers a user’s regular tickets and payment details, so less buttons have to be pressed to order repeat tickets further decreasing the interaction time.
- No paper tickets printed - so the user doesn't need to organise stacks of tickets. The phone application automatically displays the current valid ticket at startup without the user having to navigate.
- Cheaper for the Train Operator: no cash or paper needs to be handled by ticket machines; it's all virtual, therefore better for the environment, costs less, and requires less maintenance.
- Business travellers can log into the website to print out travel records for expense claims all in one place, rather than collecting and organizing paper tickets.
