"Reading has the largest concentration of ICT companies in the UK. Making use of new technology is a good way to engage a section of the population who are used to mobile phones and texting, but don’t find most political campaigning of interest,"
- John Howson, Reading East’s prospective parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats
background
In 2004 Masabi developed Pick the Prez, a groundbreaking viral mobile application which allowed phone users to cast their votes online in a virtual US presidential election.
For the UK general election in 2005 the local Lib Dems were looking for ways to use new technology to engage with the tech-savvy but politically disinterested youth voters.
project
Based on the same core technology as Pick the Prez, Masabi built a mobile Java viral application which highlighted the costs of the Iraq conflict. It allowed users to vote on how they would allocate the £5bn cost of the war into alternative spending areas with options including health, education, policing and the environment. Votes were then uploaded to a website, allowing users to compare their selections with national averages.
The application was distributable by users from their handsets over SMS using Masabi's viral distribution system.
