{"id":12186,"date":"2012-04-23T09:49:30","date_gmt":"2012-04-23T08:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/masabidev.wpengine.com\/news\/mbta-and-masabi-to-launch-first-smartphone-rail-ticketing-system-in-the-us\/"},"modified":"2014-11-25T15:21:02","modified_gmt":"2014-11-25T15:21:02","slug":"mbta-and-masabi-to-launch-first-smartphone-rail-ticketing-system-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.masabi.com\/es\/news\/mbta-and-masabi-to-launch-first-smartphone-rail-ticketing-system-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"MBTA and Masabi to Launch First Smartphone Rail Ticketing System in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-\">\n<h2><strong>MBTA and Masabi to Launch First Smartphone Rail Ticketing System in the U.S.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Apps will allow Commuter Rail customers to purchase and display tickets on iPhone, Android and Blackberry<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BOSTON, MA \u2013 23<sup>rd<\/sup> April 2012 \u2013<\/strong> Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi US Ltd, the transit mobile ticketing pioneer, jointly announce that they will be bringing mobile ticketing to MBTA commuter rail riders this fall.\u00a0With applications for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, customers will be able to seamlessly purchase commuter rail tickets and passes.\u00a0 Once tickets are purchased, customers will be able to use and display directly via their phone screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMassDOT and the MBTA are striving to bring our customers convenience without added costs. We are delivering just that with this project and this technology,\u201d said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this new and innovative approach, we are putting a ticket machine right in the palms of our customers\u2019 hands,\u201d said Acting MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis.<\/p>\n<p>Less than half of MBTA\u2019s 140 Commuter Rail stations have fare vending machines, forcing many customers to pay for tickets on board. \u00a0But that will soon change as riders will be able to purchase tickets via credit or debit cards directly from their phones. \u00a0Monthly pass holders will be able to seamlessly link a plastic CharlieCard to their pass allowing them \u201ctap-in\u201d instead of using magnetic tickets for the MBTA subway and bus systems.<\/p>\n<p>The new solution will help the MBTA reduce costs by eliminating the need for additional vending machines and lowering cash handling costs.\u00a0 To help combat fare evasion, all mobile tickets will have barcodes allowing for validation.\u00a0 Throughout the pilot program, smart phone-equipped train conductors will be checking tickets to ensure their validity.\u00a0 Masabi will provide a comprehensive mTicketing solution including; consumer-facing applications, backend servers, payment integration and scanning\/validation software for train conductors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy placing a personalized ticket machine in the pocket of commuters, they can now buy tickets wherever they are, faster than ever before,\u201d said Giacomo Biggiero, Director of Masabi US Ltd. \u201cMBTA will also see significant benefits in terms of reducing costly cash handling charges and the cost of additional ticket machines.
