To acknowledge this celebration of all things code, some of Base\u2019s talented engineers have put together this short collection of tips for budding coders just setting out on their industry journey. Don\u2019t be afraid to get in touch with the Base team\u200a\u2014\u200aour contact details are at the end of the story.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-image\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1*rCK2dH2o7u4qvE_rYdJlBg.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dave Hulbert<br><\/strong>Machines have spent the past few decades tricking us into believing that when we write code, we should write it solely with them in mind. This occurs because they are very quick to judge whether our code works or not. Our brains pick up on this and release dopamine if the machine is happy with us or enters a state of dysphoria if it says we are wrong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s two things we need to do to win against the machines:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of the humans (including your future self). Just because the machine likes your code doesn\u2019t mean you can move on to the next thing. They only approve of things like \u201ccorrectness\u201d and \u201cvalidity\u201d; we humans desire simplicity and are averse to ambiguity. Only be satisfied when your code has the attributes that humans favour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn to use the machines\u2019 tricks against them. Start with incredibly simple code and make many tiny iterations\u200a\u2014\u200agetting the machine to feed back every few seconds or minutes. Hardly anything changed from your point of view, so the new code is very likely to work as expected. The machine, however, is eager to judge your code from top to bottom with zero preconceptions or even memory of the past.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beau Lovell, Engineer<br><\/strong>Don\u2019t give your variables stupid names, like $variableKeyIdentifierThing or $monkeyToastTastesGreat. You\u2019re only creating more work for yourself later down the line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bryan Hutchinson<br><\/strong>Don\u2019t believe everything you read on stackoverflow.com!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-image\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1*z8AM0HXRDHV1tj5EQdN9cA.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Callum Taylor<br><\/strong>Firstly\u200a\u2014\u200aLearn coding as if it were an actual spoken language. Read your code like it\u2019s a logical sentence, and things should (sort of) start to make sense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly\u200a\u2014\u200aIt\u2019s important to always bare in mind that you will never write perfect code that works flawlessly. You will continually change your coding style over the years, so learn to adapt and absorb different styles and techniques, and continually perfect what you do, without having to <em>be<\/em> perfect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirdly\u200a\u2014\u200aIf after hours of searching for a solution to a problem and finding no results, chances are you\u2019re doing something wrong. Don\u2019t be afraid to go back to the drawing board\u200a\u2014\u200amany times you\u2019ll find that it\u2019s quicker than going down a rabbit hole looking for a quick fix. It\u2019s an approach that has saved so much time over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally (and most importantly)\u200a\u2014\u200aYou must learn the <em>fundamentals <\/em>of coding, because, like language, the building blocks are the same, just that the syntax changes. If you know the fundamentals, it makes transferring your knowledge to other languages and frameworks much easier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bonus: Learn source control, because it is a <em>very<\/em> favourable skill for employment. Just not subversion\/CVS\/anything, but git.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ryan Howell<br><\/strong>It\u2019s a harsh truth, but any code you write you\u2019ll hate in a year or even less\u200a\u2014\u200aalthough, on the positive side, that\u2019s usually because you\u2019ve gotten better. Coding is all about constant improvement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, take the time to learn multiple languages. Using the wrong tool for the job just costs you more time. Having options doesn\u2019t just make you more flexible, it makes you more hireable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-image\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1600\/1*O3fDiy_86uvPcoAfMIbgNQ.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jonathan Ginn<br><\/strong>Those learning to code 10\u201315 years ago would face the choice of traditional learning paths (getting a degree) or trying to teach themselves. For most, it became a mix of both.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, today there are a huge amount of classes and coaches to help you learn how to code. If you\u2019re an adult, see if there\u2019s a local <a href=\"https:\/\/codebar.io\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Codebar<\/a> near you, or if you want to encourage your child to learn, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codeclub.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CodeClub<\/a> is the way forward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you prefer to work alone, there are great tutorials and books on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.superhi.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SuperHi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/teamtreehouse.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Treehouse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you want to see what creativity you can conjure up, <a href=\"https:\/\/glitch.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Glitch<\/a> allows you to share and create new projects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for a tip\u200a\u2014\u200abeing the best at writing code isn\u2019t the pinnacle. The best programmers are also the best communicators and team players. Learn how to work in a team to bring the best out of each other. You can\u2019t do everything, but together you can.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shane de Jager<br><\/strong>Don\u2019t be scared to refactor your code <em>now<\/em>. It will only come back to bite you later on if you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, don\u2019t expect to write perfect code first time. Most of the time, it won\u2019t happen.
