Nevertheless, in 1987, Apple started to imagine how intelligent personal assistants could help us in our daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-4by3 mb2\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-jiBLQyUi38\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are still far from such a level of natural language conversation with machines, but there has been a huge progress in the last few years thanks to machine learning research. Smart voice recognition services like <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/uk\/ios\/siri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assistant.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Now<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.amazon.com\/alexa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/mobile\/experiences\/cortana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are able to answer many questions by linking information from different sources such as Wikipedia or TripAdvisor. Even more interestingly, they are able to perform additional tasks like organising your calendar, booking a table in a restaurant, playing music and many more. These intelligent assistants are not only available in smartphones, but also in smart-home devices like Amazon Echo or Google Home which suddenly become part of the family. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some fear these assistants becoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HAL_9000\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HAL 9000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_Brother_(Nineteen_Eighty-Four)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Brother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s no surprise that there are some open-source alternatives like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mycroft.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycroft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jasperproject.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jasper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that move away from big corporations. Others however, see an extraordinary opportunity to have a truly hands-free experience on many applications. These smart-home devices are especially interesting for some elderly and disabled people who may find it difficult or even impossible to use smartphones, but still need to access all kinds of information. The seemingly simple change from touch to voice will undoubtedly open up new kinds of interactions for those that can benefit most. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-funded mobility providers like Uber already offer an integration layer with these services, which allow customers to order a taxi by just asking. As this becomes an accepted part of modern society those that don\u2019t provide this functionality will fall behind and cease to be relevant to the next generation of consumers. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/feb\/21\/amazon-fire-tv-stick-voice-control-alexa-uk-tv-screens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon announcing today the addition of Alexa to its Fire TV stick<\/a> and bringing voice assistance to UK TV screens, there are plenty of signs that this technology isn&#8217;t going away anytime soon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passenger have already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverpassenger.com\/2016\/11\/01\/smart-home-integration-launched-at-euro-bus-expo-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">integrated our platform with Amazon Echo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are working on more integrations to put public transport operators at the heart of smart cities.
