MBTA & Masabi Launch US\u2019 First Smartphone Commuter Rail Ticketing System<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From Today, Boston Commuter Rail and Ferry Customers Can Buy & Display Tickets Using iPhone & Android Apps<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

BOSTON, MA \u2013 12th November 2012 \u2013<\/strong> Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi US Ltd, the transit mobile ticketing pioneer, jointly announced the launch of the US\u2019 first full smartphone commuter rail ticketing system.<\/p>\n

Customers can now purchase and then display rail tickets and passes using the MBTA mTicket app for iPhone and Android \u2013 Blackberry devices will also be supported soon. The tickets are displayed on the phone\u2019s screen as an encrypted barcode and as a human readable ticket. The app can be found by searching for \u2018MBTA mTicket\u2019 in the Apple App Store and Google Play.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new MBTA mTicket application is the latest innovation from MassDOT and the MBTA,\u201d said MassDOT Secretary and CEO, Richard A. Davey. \u201cCustomers will now have the ability to purchase tickets without waiting in lines meaning they get more time back in their day and more control over their commute.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWith this new application, Commuter Rail users don\u2019t have to wait in line to purchase tickets nor pay a surcharge for buying tickets aboard trains. Customers may purchase a ticket in seconds – anywhere, anytime,\u201d said Acting MBTA General Manager, Jonathan Davis. \u201cMobile ticketing offers customers the convenience and simplicity that makes it easier than ever to use public transit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Less than half of MBTA\u2019s 140 Commuter Rail stations have fare vending machines, forcing many customers to pay for tickets on board. This will no longer be an issue for many customers with smartphones as they can buy tickets via credit or debit card directly from their phone – anywhere, anytime.<\/p>\n

The new solution helps the MBTA reduce costs by eliminating the need for additional vending machines and lowering cash handling costs. To help combat fare evasion, all mobile tickets also have cryptographic validation. Train conductors will be checking tickets to ensure their validity using their own smartphone application, avoiding the need for to them to carry heavy custom scanning equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy placing a personalized ticket machine in the pocket of commuters, they can now buy tickets wherever they are, faster than ever before,\u201d said Kevin Mansfield, JustRide Product Manager. \u201cMBTA will also see significant benefits in terms of reducing costly cash handling charges and the cost of additional ticket machines. We are delighted to have launched our first JustRide end-to-end mTicketing system.\u201d<\/p>\n
