Cuomo confirmed the launch and accelerated rollout of MTA eTix, a free MTA app that will allow Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad customers to purchase train tickets anytime, anywhere with their mobile devices.\u00a0<\/span><span>The news was covered extensively in the media including the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-mta-app-lets-rail-commuters-buy-tickets-on-their-smartphones-1467763337\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><span>,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016\/07\/05\/new-york-speeds-up-access-to-mta-train-ticket-app\/#comments\">Engadget<\/a><span>,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/7\/5\/12098804\/mta-metro-north-lirr-mobile-ticket-app-announced\">The Verge<\/a><span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/07\/05\/cuomo-says-train-ticket-app-will-be-ready-sooner-than-planned\/\">New York Post<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Passengers on MNR\u2019s Hudson Line and LIRR\u2019s Port Washington Lines are able to use their smartphones to buy and display tickets to travel using the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mta.info\/mta-eTix-promo\">MTA eTix mobile ticketing app<\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><span>The app, which was scheduled for completion by the end of 2016, will be available to all riders of both railroads by the end of this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/hubspot-6a0b006748301648a7c9.jpg\" alt=\"Cuomo.jpg\" width=\"805\" height=\"537\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>With MTA eTix,\u00a0which is powered by Masabi&#8217;s JustRide platform, customers who download the app will sign up for an account, select the ticket they wish to buy, and enter credit or debit card information. They will then be able to ride the train in three simple steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>1. Buy a ticket by entering information about origin and destination, and selecting the type of ticket (one-way, 10-trip, weekly or monthly). The ticket is then saved in an electronic \u201cticket wallet\u201d feature in the app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>2. Prior to boarding the train, pull up the ticket from the ticket wallet and activate the ticket by tapping on the \u201cactivate ticket\u201d button.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>3. When a conductor comes through the train to ask for tickets, have the activated ticket displayed, and simply show the smartphone screen to the conductor. Conductors will visually validate the mobile ticket by looking at the screen. As the rollout proceeds, conductors will use a handheld device to scan mobile tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>You can watch the full announcement here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p_-GwEgwkLI\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p_-GwEgwkLI <\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p_-GwEgwkLI\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masabi.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/hubspot-625387a779a8366ef22c.png\" alt=\"etixMTA.png\" width=\"805\" title=\"etixMTA.png\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur administration remains committed to building a transit network that is responsive to the needs of travelers who rely on mass transportation, and the launch of the MTA eTix app is a major step forward in our efforts,\u201d<\/em><span> <\/span><strong>Governor Cuomo said.<\/strong><span> <\/span><em>\u201cThis new app puts riders first by eliminating the ticket line and helping New Yorkers and visitors get where they need to go with more freedom and convenience than ever before.\u00a0We will continue to create a 21st century transit system that embraces innovation to ensure that we are building a stronger, more competitive New York.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The eTix app will be available for all lines on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad in the following weeks:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2022 June 30: MTA eTix available on LIRR Port Washington Branch &amp; Metro-North Hudson Line<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2022 Week of July 25: MTA eTix becomes available on Metro-North Harlem Line<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2022 Week August 22: Full system wide implementation of MTA eTix, as the app becomes available on the rest of LIRR and Metro-North\u2019s New Haven Line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The MTA eTix launch follows a successful field test, during which 150 customers who ride the Long Island Rail Road Port Washington Branch or Metro-North\u2019s Hudson Line tested the app. Both conductors and participating customers monitored the app\u2019s performance, and reported any problems they encountered to the app development team.
