According to recent surveys from The Transit Wire<\/strong><\/a> and Mass Transit<\/a>,<\/strong> cash and cash handling costs are a significant problem for transport authorities, fare collection teams, and riders.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Mass Transit<\/strong><\/em> survey on the Future of Fare C<\/span>ollection<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Cash handling and operating costs were highlighted as a top\u00a0concern. In fact, it was t<\/span>he second-biggest challenge outlined by those who took the survey with 69% of respondents flagging it as a challenge which needs to be solved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

This sentiment was echoed when The Transit Wire<\/em><\/strong> surveyed its audience on the State of Fare Collection<\/a>. When\u00a0<\/span>asked about\u00a0the challenges agencies\u00a0currently face, the 2nd biggest challenge was with cash handling.\u00a0\u00a0Defined broadly as collection, processing, and potential leakage, some 41% identified this as a main concern.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To get a full picture of the challenges of fare payment technology, The Transit Wire<\/strong> <\/em>then asked agencies to identify the main\u00a0challenges their passengers faced with existing ticketing.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the agency perspective, customers faced mostly logistical challenges. The top concern, with 42% of respondents saying it was the main challenge for riders, was paying with cash, while about\u00a039% said that customers did not have enough retail outlets to purchase tickets.<\/span><\/p>\n

These survey results shed some light on the significant problem of cash and cash handling for North American transit agencies, the fare collection teams who\u00a0run these\u00a0systems and the riders who use them.<\/span><\/p>\n
