The universal token standard explained

Universal token is a standard that enables any payment token — bank card, phone, wearable — to work across any transit network. Here's what it means for agencies and riders.

Resources

A universal token is an abstraction layer that sits above the physical payment medium. Instead of a card, phone, or wearable being the ticket, the token — a unique identifier — is the ticket. The same token can be presented via any device.

  • Device-agnostic travel

The same account token works whether the rider taps a bank card, an Apple Watch, an NFC phone, or a QR barcode. The validator resolves the token; the medium is irrelevant.

  • Interoperability

Universal tokens are the foundation for multi-operator and multi-modal ticketing — a single credential that works across agencies and modes without the rider managing multiple accounts.

  • Justride implementation

Justride's account model is built on token-based credentials. Each account supports multiple linked tokens — giving riders flexibility while giving agencies a single view of each traveller.
