Turning cash into fare media

Riders without a bank account or a smartphone can top up their travel with cash at their local shop. Payzone's counter network puts that within walking distance for most of the UK, with no agency infrastructure to build or maintain.

How the integration works

  1. Rider starts in store or in the app.

They pick up a card at the counter, or open the app and generate a top-up barcode.

  2. Cashier scans it at the till.

The terminal already in the shop reads it, so there's no special hardware and no custom POS development.

  3. Rider pays with cash or card.

Both fare media are accepted at the counter.

  4. Funds are available straight away.

The balance updates immediately, with no registration or existing account needed.

Key benefits for agencies

  • Cash riders included by default.

Unbanked and underbanked riders get the same fare products, capping and concessions as everyone else.

  • No capital outlay.

Retail coverage without buying, siting and maintaining agency-owned kiosks.

  • Proven and repeatable.

Deployed with more than 25 US transit agencies already, so it is a configuration rather than a first.

  • No pre-registration.

A rider can buy a card and load it in a single transaction, anonymously, the lowest possible barrier to a first journey.
