Knoxville Area Transit Launches Next-Generation Mobile Ticketing System with Transit App, Powered by Masabi

Agency launches contactless mobile ticketing solution with new onboard validation devices

Knoxville, TN & New York, NY Wednesday 8 November 2023 – Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) today announced the launch of a contactless mobile ticketing solution with the Transit app and powered by Masabi, the company delivering Fare Payments-as-a-Service through its open platform Justride. The next-generation mobile ticketing system uses Masabi’s Justride fare payment platform, enabling riders to purchase tickets for KAT services anytime, anywhere, through the Transit app.

From today, riders on KAT’s network will have access to an all-in-one experience in the Transit app, an app that many KAT riders already use, combining mobile ticketing with trip planning, real-time vehicle tracking and connections to first and last-mile services such as rideshare, and bike hire across the city. KAT riders can also purchase mobile tickets using cash at Knoxville Station, ensuring cash riders have access to the new service.

Masabi has also installed validation units running its Justride Inspect software across the Knoxville Area Transit fleet of buses, meaning passengers can simply scan their phone when boarding, validating their pass and identifying the ticket as valid for use. This will help speed up boarding times, making services more efficient for riders, while providing the agency with valuable data enabling insights for smarter decisions and improved services.

“We are so pleased to expand our fare payment options in an integrated way by using Masabi’s advanced technology and Transit’s seamless integration and ease of use for our customers,” said Isaac Thorne, Director of Transit for the City of Knoxville. “Working with Masabi and Transit dramatically expands our fare payment options and convenience, enabling our riders to plan their journeys, pay their fares, and scan their tickets, all in one app.”

“As we’ve witnessed across North America, the combination of Masabi and Transit app’s industry-leading expertise creates an efficient and convenient approach to transit ticketing by simplifying and enhancing the transit experience, promoting more sustainable means of urban and suburban travel, and contributing to more efficient and data-driven transit agencies,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “We’re delighted to be working with KAT and continuing to expand the footprint of forward-thinking cities rolling out our technology, to prioritize their customers’ needs and build for the future.”

“We want to make riding public transit as simple and stress-free as possible, and this solution helps do that,” said David Block-Schachter, Chief Business Officer at Transit. “KAT passengers already rely on Transit to find their next trip and track their ride in real-time. Adding the ability to buy transit fares gives riders everything they need in one app.”

Knoxville Area Transit joins more than 30 agencies that make it easier for riders to use their services by offering a best-in-class ticketing and app experience with Transit and Masabi. The service is available to agencies of all sizes and can be deployed as a stand-alone app or alongside existing mobile ticketing options.
