EZfare Extends to West Virginia as Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT) Launches Contactless Fare Payment Solution Powered by Masabi through the Transit app
West Virginia becomes fourth state, and KRT the 16th agency, to join the largest regional ticketing platform in the United States
New York, NY Tuesday, 12th December 2023 – Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT), the public transportation authority for Kanawha County, West Virginia, NEORide, the Transit app, and Masabi, today announced that KRT has become the 16th and latest agency to join EZfare as the United States’ largest regional ticketing system expands into a fourth state. Masabi has also installed electronic validators across KRT’s bus fleet, enabling riders to simply scan their ticket from their smartphone device when boarding, simplifying the boarding process and removing unnecessary dwell time.
Today’s news makes riding public transit in Kanawha County, and across West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky easier and more convenient. Transit will become KRT’s official app for purchasing tickets and passes, while tickets will also be available in the EZfare app, giving customers an unprecedented opportunity to purchase tickets anytime, anywhere and travel to their destination with just a few taps of their smartphone. All options are available to view and download at www.ezfare.us.
Both the EZfare and Transit apps also offer Stored Value Accounts, allowing passengers to load payment online or in person at KRT’s designated transit centers or local participating retail locations, for those who prefer to continue using cash. Stored value can then be used in app to purchase KRT single rides, day passes, 5-day passes, and 31-day passes (plus a reduced 1 ride for those who are eligible). KRT joins 15 other transit agencies that already sell their fares on EZfare’s regional fare payment system. The system is powered by Masabi, with ticketing across 4 states, 16 agencies and multiple apps including Uber and Moovit that are enabled using Masabi’s Justride SDK.
“Public Transit is an important part of Kanawha County’s future, making it an excellent and convenient alternative transportation mode for many people throughout communities in our service area. At KRT, we are constantly looking at ways to plan for the future and implement new, cost-efficient improvements to serve our passengers,” said KRT Executive Director, Sean Hill. Mr. Hill also stated, “We were thrilled to join EZfare in conjunction with Masabi and Transit. This is a move that aligns with KRT’s priorities, helping people move people, while enhancing the passenger experience, and offering clean, safe, and efficient services.”
“The continued growth and success of EZfare demonstrates the power of Masabi’s cutting edge Fare-Payments-as-a-Service approach, providing agencies with a quick, safe and cost-efficient route to fare payment modernization and developing inter-agency co-operation using technology that can be easily and effectively implemented,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “We are thrilled to see this model continue to expand with the system now expanding into a fourth state and 16th agency, enabling ever more agencies and their riders to realize the benefits of cashless technology and regional travel via a single solution.”
