Xunta de Galicia Launches Spain’s First Regional Account-Based Ticketing Multi-Operator System in Partnership with Masabi and Plexus Tech

Cutting-edge account-based ticketing platform with integrated trip planning for the Galicia Mobility Platform 4.0 (MoBT)

London, October 8, 2025 – Masabi, the global leader in enterprise-grade SaaS fare collection for public transport, today announced the launch of Spain’s first regional Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) system in partnership with Plexus Tech for Xunta de Galicia. The new system, branded as Galicia Mobility Platform 4.0 (MoBT), marks a major step forward in the modernization of public transport in Galicia, enabling passengers to plan, pay, and travel seamlessly using their mobile phones.

A pilot phase is currently live with one operator, (Rías Baixas), having launched in July on routes in Santiago de Compostela, Deza, and the A Coruña–Lugo line. In October, the solution will expand to services in 26 municipalities, including Pontevedra, Vigo, Cangas, Moaña, O Grove, and Sanxenxo, before ultimately reaching 127 operators as the deployment progresses.

Following the pilot launch, the system will expand in phases, making travel easier for passengers by allowing them to purchase mobile tickets anytime, anywhere, or simply tap their phones on onboard readers when boarding, with fares automatically deducted from their accounts. This removes the need for cash or paper tickets, providing a faster and more convenient way to pay. Mobile tickets are available through the MoBT app, and powered by Masabi’s Justride SDK. The MoBT app has been available since July for Android and iOS.

Progressively in the following months, MoBT will include Xunta’s Xente Nova benefits, enabling young people under 21 registered in the app to enjoy up to 60 free trips per month. The benefits will be applied progressively across Galicia’s 127 regular transport contracts. In parallel, a new MoBT web portal (mobt.gal) will launch to provide the same functionality as the app online, excluding ticket purchases, replacing the previous bus.gal site.

The next phase of the project will introduce an open payments system, expanding to include smartcards, giving passengers more flexible payment options. Ticket validation will be handled through a network of third-party hardware partners, with Masabi’s hardware-agnostic approach ensuring seamless integration across all validators in the region.

This project represents a major milestone in the modernization of Galicia’s public transportation network,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “By working alongside Plexus and the Xunta de Galicia, we are delivering a cutting-edge solution that simplifies fare payments for passengers while improving efficiency for all operators involved.”

This project marks a major milestone in the evolution of public transport ticketing in Galicia and across Spain. Together with our partners at Masabi, we have created a solution for the Xunta de Galicia that enables a modern, scalable, and efficient mobility ecosystem benefitting passengers and operators alike,” said Suso García, Head of Transport Digitalization at Plexus Tech. “Account-based ticketing and digital-first solutions can shape a smarter, more accessible future for public transportation in the region.

The launch has been made possible by Masabi’s Fare Payments-as-a-Service approach, delivering authorities and operators the latest fare payment innovations using Justride, a cloud-native multi-operator open platform, which is constantly updating and adding new features such as fare capping, allowing transit agencies to meet evolving passenger needs. This greatly improves the journey experience for passengers by delivering continuous innovation and helps operators and authorities keep up with the pace of technology change.

The partnership between Xunta de Galicia, Masabi, and Plexus Tech is a testament to their shared vision of modern, accessible, and passenger-focused mobility. The ABT pilot marks the beginning of a fully integrated regional tap-and-go experience, allowing passengers across Galicia to travel seamlessly using account-based ticketing. This is the start of a transformation that will see the entire region benefiting from a unified fare payments system. By collaborating with best-in-class partners and leveraging Masabi’s Open Platform, this initiative is delivering a scalable, future-ready ticketing system that will evolve over time, ensuring that public transport in Galicia remains innovative, efficient, and seamlessly connected for years to come.
